Moving Checklist

1. Take a full inventory of the items you will move. Obtain a written appraisal of antique items to verify their value. (Don’t wax or oil wood furniture before moving, because some products may soften the wood, making it vulnerable to imprinting from furniture pads.) Discard, sell or give away things you won’t need (or haven’t used and think you might but never will!)

2. Consult with your mover before planning to move any plants.

3. Dispose of all flammables such as cleaning fluids and aerosol cans. Drain the fuel from your power mower and other machinery. Discard partly used containers of any substance that may leak.

4. Unplug all electronic equipment such as television sets, home computers, stereos, etc. 24 hours in advance of a move so they will be at room temperature on moving day. Moving a TV set and other electronic equipment in which heat is still retained could cause internal damage.

5. Return all library books and borrowed items. Use or get rid of frozen and perishable foods.

6. Update your address book.

7. Notify the following of your new address a month before you move:

  • Post office
  • Social security office
  • Lawyers, doctors
  • Magazines, book clubs, newspapers
  • Banks/loan companies
  • Insurance companies
  • Charge accounts
  • Employer

8. Write down important phone numbers and arrange cut-off dates:

  • Electric company
  • Garbage company
  • Phone company
  • Gas company
  • Water company

9. Arrange transfer of:

  • School records
  • Medical/dental records
  • Veterinary records
  • Safe deposit goxes
  • Savings accounts
  • Legal records

10. Be sure to obtain a sufficient supply of important medical prescriptions.

11. Make arrangements for moving your pets.

12. If you are doing the packing, obtain materials and begin packing at least two weeks prior to the move. (Don’t come to a screeching halt every time you see a good looking box on the roadside.)

13. Keep a record of all tax-deductible moving expenses and receipts.

14. Set aside essential, daily-used items. Pack them last. Unload first.

  • Clothing
  • Pet food
  • Toilet articles
  • Bed linens/towels
  • Hardware from disassembled items
  • Medicine
  • Emergency items
  • Cooking utensils
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Tool kit
  • Light bulbs
  • Snacks/instant foods
  • Favorite toys/games

15. Make sure your mover knows where to contact you or your designated representative during the move. Confirm your valuation amount and shipping dates as they appear on the Bill of Lading. Be certain to check off all items at delivery.
